Big things are happening over at Google. In a surprise announcement, Eric Schmidt has decided to step aside as CEO and is giving control over to co-founder Larry Page. Schmidt will stay on as Executive Chairman and as an adviser to Page, while Sergey Brin will continue helping to create and launch new products for Google. Schmidt announced the leadership change via Twitter declaring, "Day-to-day adult supervision no longer needed!"
In the past, all executive decisions at Google were made by the Schmidt, Page and Brin trio. While Brin and Schmidt will still have influence, day to day operational choices will now be the purview of Page. Schmidt's role will be primarily to develop partnerships and relationships with other companies and with government entities. While the differences may not be immediately apparent to us as everyday consumers, the change should help the company streamline its decision-making process. And as we all know, being agile is almost as important as having a good idea or lots of cash when you're an Internet company.
