The Technology Newsbucket: Google's Eric Schmidt out as CEO, Facebook launches new mobile app, and more

Plus what Google H.264 drop actually means, and lessons from Evernote's first week on the Mac App Store

A quick burst of seven links for you to chew over, as picked by the Technology team

An update from the Chairman >> The Official Google Blog

Schmidt's surprise valedictory: "When I joined Google in 2001 I never imagined ? even in my wildest dreams ? that we would get as far, as fast as we have today. Search has quite literally changed people's lives ? increasing the collective sum of the world's knowledge and revolutionizing advertising in the process. And our emerging businesses ? display, Android, YouTube and Chrome ? are on fire. Of course, like any successful organization we've had our fair share of good luck, but the entire team ? now over 24,000 Googlers globally ? deserves most of the credit."

Apple??s Diabolical Plan to Screw Your iPhone >> iFixit Blog

"Apple is switching to a new type of tamper-resistant screw. This is not a standard Torx, and there are no readily available screwdrivers that can remove it. This isn't the first time they've used this type of screw ? it first appeared in the mid-2009 MacBook Pro to prevent you from replacing the the battery ? and Apple is using a similar screw on the outer case of the current MacBook Air. This screw is the primary reason the 11 ? MacBook Air earned a lousy repairability score of 4 out of 10 in our teardown last October. "Apple chose this fastener specifically because it was new, guaranteeing repair tools would be both rare and expensive. Shame on them."

Facebook Launches Rich Feature-Phone App - Tech Europe - WSJ

Interesting: Facebook targets the big sector of mobiles. "Facebook has rolled out a new application targeting lower-spec feature phones. The app was developed in conjunction with the Israeli-based Snaptu. "The Facebook for Feature Phones app works on more than 2,500 devices from Nokia, Sony Ericsson, LG and other manufacturers, Facebook's announcement says. While smartphones have captured the attention of the media, four feature phones are sold globally for every one smartphone."

Brilliant ideas for articles are often simple too.

VP8 / WEBM Demo Video >> CTN Digital

WebM/VP8 demonstration page, the sort of thing to delight Google's Chrome browser team because it's open and so on. Only works in Chrome, mind you - not in Firefox 3. (Let us know about Firefox 4 beta or Opera.)

What Google v. H.264 means, in summary >> Mo McRoberts

Calm summing-up by Mo McRoberts (who, you'd better believe, really knows about video codecs) of the situation post-Google's decision. If you only read one thing about this whole mess, make it this one.

Four Lessons From Evernote??s First Week On The Mac App Store >> TechCrunch guest post

"About 320,000 people downloaded Evernote in the first week of the Mac App Store. Of this number, about 120,000 had never used Evernote before, and created new accounts. This represents more than 50% of all the new Evernote accounts created last week. The Mac platform ? which used to be in fourth place for new user registrations behind iOS, Android and Windows ? has now jumped to first. "It's obvious in hindsight, but the presence of a well-formed app store is the single most important factor for the viability of a platform for third party developers. If you want to take this a step further and say that a robust third-party software market is the most important factor for the success of the platform overall, well ? I hope Windows gets a good app store soon."
