The Wall Street Journal has confirmed rumors that Apple is developing a new line of smaller and cheaper iPhones. Those trusty old "sources close to the development" tell the Journal that the new device will be about half the size of the iPhone 4, and will be sold to service providers at about half the price of existing iPhones. The new phone, which goes by the codename "N97," will apparently feature an "edge-to-edge" touchscreen, as well as "voice-based navigation" capabilities. According to the Journal's source, it will also be "significantly lighter" than the latest iPhone. These unusually loquacious sources went on to tell the Journal that the company is considering offering its MobileMe cloud storage service for free. (It currently costs $99 per year.) And Apple may use the MobileMe platform to launch a new online music service, which has reportedly been in the works for more than a year. Both Steve Jobs and an Apple spokesman declined to comment on the reports.
