Flaming Lips to Release an MP3 a Week, Like Kanye (But on 'Cereal Boxes')

Innovative artists tired of the unyielding ways of the corporate music industry made our pick as one of the coolest tech trends in 2010. When Kanye West released one song each week to his Twitter followers, the hype surrounding his critically acclaimed 'My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy' snowballed, even though many of the songs he offered for free download then appeared on the album. Not only was West able to figure out what songs his audience liked (since he used the reception to put together the album), but fans connected directly with the rapper -- with no label or PR team acting as intermediaries.

Oklahoma City's The Flaming Lips, led by weirdo front man Wayne Coyne, have reportedly been inspired by Kanye's approach, and Coyne has announced that his group is going to release one song each month for 2011. Speaking with Rolling Stone, the singer said, "With this new thing, we're going to spend a lot of time recording at our houses or wherever we are at." Swedish pop star Robyn also received attention in '10 for doing a similar thing -- releasing mini albums that she had produced while on tour. Not only did she generate excitement with constantly new material, but the bloggers (like us -- especially like us) watched enraptured as she used a mobile studio to keep her audience enthralled. Not only was she able to deliver bite-sized bangers, but, because she never was working on a full album, the singer stayed portable, able to promote her "Body Talk" triad.
